{"id":1178,"date":"2019-10-10T21:39:46","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T19:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/?p=1178"},"modified":"2026-03-19T12:30:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T11:30:55","slug":"portfoliodod","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/en\/portfoliodod\/","title":{"rendered":"Organization DoD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/rteamlevel\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">teams of<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> all <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/rclusterlevel\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Clusters in<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/rportfoliolevel\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">organization<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/sysarchgroup\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cluster System Engineer Group<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/clusterpogroup\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cluster Product Owner Group<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> and the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/stakeholderneeds\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">stakeholders<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> must understand what it means when a <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/backlog\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">backlog entry<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> or a result is referred to as &#8220;done&#8221;. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Although the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/clusterdod\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cluster DoDs<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> can <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/clusterdod\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">differ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> significantly from Cluster to cluster, there is only one portfolio-level DoD for the entire Organization.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Everyone needs to have a common understanding of when work is done to ensure transparency.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The Organizational DoD is the quality promise of the Organization<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The DoD also leads the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/p4dev.hardscrum.com\/sysarchgroup\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cluster System Engineer Group (CSEG)<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> when deciding how many Portfolio Backlog entries it can pull into the Cycle Backlog during Portfolio Planning. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The purpose of each Portfolio Cycle is to deliver potentially deliverable functionality within application versions and system increments that correspond to the current definition of done. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Organizations deliver an increment of results, knowledge and \/ or system functionality in each cycle. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This increment is fully verified and usable, so the Portfolio Owner can choose to release it at any time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">If the definition-of-done for a product is part of an Organization&#8217;s conventions, standards, or guidelines, all Clusters must follow them as a minimum goal. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">If &#8220;Done&#8221; for a product is not part of the Organization&#8217;s convention, the Cluster (ie the TSEG) must formulate a definition-of-done that is appropriate for the product. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">If there are several Clusters working on the same system, all Clusters must create a definition of done together. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Each system increment is additive to all previous increments and has been thoroughly tested to ensure that all increments work together. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Mature Organizations are expected to expand their respective definition-of-done appropriately to ensure stricter criteria for higher quality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Every single result, product or system should have a definition of done, which is the standard for any work performed on it.
